They encountered some sort of city-like structure that was apparently a supply base for the freighters. They located a spacial distortion in the system, which turned out to be an extra-galactic portal. They explorers entered the protal briefly, and encountered the cruiser on the other side. They retreated swiftly, as it launched some sort of telepathic bombardment, perhaps a scan or an attempt at communication, which caused considerable distress to the crew.
